In this 13-24 day lesson bundle, students complete 3 lessons. Throughout this lesson bundle, students will learn about the behavior of particles in different states of matter, develop models to represent these particles and molecules, and explore how we taste and smell things.

 

It targets the following NGSS Standards:

- Grade 5: 5-PS1-1, 5-PS1-3

- Grades 6-8: MS-PS1-1, MS-PS1-3, MS-PS1-4, MS-LS1-8

 

Lesson 1: Chai and Tea: States of Matter and Models (5-8 days)

Explore states of matter, particle models, and temperature by making tea. This lesson also builds a foundation for making observations, developing models, and designing investigations.

 

Lesson 2: Salt: Separation Methods and Properties (gr5-8) (5-10 days)

Explore how salt is extracted and made, how and why different types of salt vary, and salt’s purpose in food and cooking. Students complete multiple labs to explore how salt is extracted, including one in which they design their own investigation.

 

Lesson 3: Sourness & Butterfly Pea Lemonade: Acidity and pH (gr5-8) (3 days)

Explore sourness, acidity, and pH by comparing and measuring the acidity of different drinks, learning what happens when we taste sour things, and making a color-changing butterfly pea flower tea lemonade.

 

Each Lesson Includes:
